Accommodation p3

Experience and appreciate our wildlife, like Zebra, Kudu, Blue wildebeest, Blesbuck, Impala, Duiker and small mammals like mongoose, warthog, aardwolf, porcupine, suricate, otter and many others.

Insects and arachnids abound and a field trip by torchlight reveals shimmering spider webs and many reflections from our nocturnal residents active at night. Reptiles are hiding everywhere and we boast a fabulous diversity of bird species - estimated to be over 350 in all! Avid bird watchers from around the globe visit frequently, to participate in regular birding events.

Plant lovers will certainly enjoy the rich variety of shrubs, trees, aloes and wildflowers many of them identified, cover most of the 1000 Ha to be explored. Keen photographers, whatever their passion, will certainly have no problem finding subjects and sunsets to immortalise their visit.

The main activity at Ithumela is our Primate Foundation which comprises of an Academy and Sanctuary. Indigenous primates are protected and rehabilitated here, while our researchers, students and volunteers all share our passion for preserving our wonderful heritage. Here, we harbour primates that are caught, confiscated, injured and orphaned. We aim to release as many as possible and also contribute towards research that will eventually benefit all primates' lives.

Individual and group courses on primatology can be arranged as well as volunteer
work at the Foundation and neighbouring Wildlife in Need Rehabilitation centre can be organised. Special research projects in conjunction with The University of Pretoria can be arranged. Breeding and release programs are also run in conjunction with other Universities and Rehabilitation centres.
Researchers and volunteers all endeavour to enrich their lives and the few wild residents also help to teach them normal behaviour.
Don't forget to drop a coin in the wishing well to ensure another visit!
